OCEAN TERMINAL EXTENSION
Commercial development of a new 4 storey extension building at the Ocean Terminal. The site is located at Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. The building comprises of cruise arrival/departure halls, customs, immigration and health departments, ticketing, waiting hall, back-offices, shopping arcade, food and beverage outlets and back-of-house areas.
The project, although small, was a highly complicated design by Foster + Partners. One of the major challenges was the movement of the marine deck due to tidal changes and berthing cruise ships requiring the base of the façade to be released in all directions, requiring the introduction of a ‘floating deck’ to transfer the load back to the columns. Large cantilever decks at each level contributed to the highly demanding movement requirements for both the curved double laminated insulated glazing units and the 4.5m x 2.4m custom made automated sliding doors.
