KUBE

A golden cube seems to float on a sea of light on the Hong Kong waterfront. KUBE, designed by OMA, is a compact, multi-functional installation: at once a coffee kiosk, an outdoor seating area and an event space.

The pavilion is on the Victoria Harbour waterfront in front of the K11 Musea shopping centre . The architects hope it will be “a distinctive and intimate place for encounters and happenings”. By day it is a kiosk for a local artisan coffee brewer, modelled on the open-air food stalls found in Hong Kong, with black marble blocks alongside it for use as seating. At night when all its openings are closed, it evokes a sculpture, illuminated by lighting concealed around its edges. The ethereal lighting installation was created by Inhabit’s specialist lighting design team in Hong Kong.

The lighting for the Kube represents an excellent example of using a restrained and integrated design approach to emphasise a modest piece of architecture that appears distinctive within the busy cityscape of Hong Kong. The Kube kiosk’s anodised aluminum finish changes colour as light of different qualities reflects from the material, offering visitors unique scenes whatever the time of day.
