XIQU CENTRE

The Xiqu Centre is a world-class arts venue specifically built for Xiqu (Chinese opera) performances, and it is also a centre for the production, education and research of this unique art form. Located at the eastern edge of the West Kowloon Cultural District, at the junction of Canton Road and Austin Road, the Xiqu Centre forms a gateway to the district. This seven-storey musical complex will help preserve and reinvent Cantonese opera and other Chinese traditional theatre for Hong Kong and beyond.

The architects describe the façade as reminiscent of a lantern shimmering behind a beaded stage curtain. The outer skin is a modular system of curved aluminium slats arranged in wavy patterns. These form a curtain around the building invoking theatre curtains drawn back at each of the corners on the ground floor to form entrances. In addition to a 1,000-seat theatre, the centre has a Tea House Theatre with around 200 seats, a seminar hall with around 110 seats, learning spaces, eight rehearsal and practice rooms, and retail and dining facilities.
