Studio City, Phase 2

Studio City, Phase 2 is the latest of many of Inhabit’s fruitful collaborations with Melco Resorts & Entertainment. The development, which comprises of two hotel towers and a podium structure that is home to the largest indoor waterpark in Asia, is no less ambitious than its previous instalment.

Its two hotel towers, each 150m tall, feature a unitised curtain wall system that is fluted on plan and tapers as it goes up. The podium roof, skylights and façade echo the towers with dramatically polyhedral folds that allude to origami.

Melco engaged Zaha Hadid Architects as the design architect and Leigh & Orange as the Executive Architect, with whom Inhabit has worked closely from early schematic stage to develop elegant, high performance and cost-effective façade, access and maintenance and lighting design solutions for the development’s architecturally expressive façade systems.

Dickson Wong“This project is yet another great example of how Inhabit’s multi-disciplinary approach to façade design and engineering has facilitated the seamless integration of everything façade-related, which is important for a high-end, premium development that is Studio City Phase 2. ”

Inhabit’s scope on this project also includes BIM modelling of the façade and access and maintenance systems of the podium to LOD300. Given the complexity of its steel structure and the waterpark’s slides clash checking over BIM during design stage with the entire consultant team was proven to be essential.

To achieve Melco’s sustainability objectives, which was ‘Excellent’ rating under BREEAM, Inhabit worked closely with the sustainability consultant to establish the thermal and air tightness performance of the façade systems, as well as testing requirements that needed to be included in the specifications.
