Putuo Mountain Guanyin Shrine

The Guanyin Shrine is the centre-piece of the Mount Putuo Guanyin Cultural Park, in the scenic area of Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, People’s Republic of China. Mount Putuo, an island in the East China Sea, is one of the four sacred mountains in Chinese Buddhism.

The cultural park showcases the culture of Guanyin (the goddess of mercy in Chinese Buddhism) and the Shrine integrates the style of traditional Chinese pavilions while fusing tradition and modernity. Since the rise of cultural tourism in China in the 1990s, the East China Architectural Design and Research Institute (ECADI) has participated in some important religious and traditional cultural building projects including the Mount Putuo Guanyin Cultural Park which has been developed by the Buddhist Association of Putuo Mountain.

ECADI engaged Inhabit’s team in China to provide the full-scope curtain wall consulting services for the Shrine project. The main façade systems includes a masonry stone wall with a stone thickness of 100mm~200mm, double-curved, welded, seamless copper cladding, a titanium roofing system and a steel-framed curtain wall and skylight. The façade is designed for a service life of at least 100 years. Stainless steel waterproofing is used behind all cladding systems.

The temple is one of four Inhabit projects that have been awarded the Luban Prize (National Quality Project for China Construction Engineering 2020-2021) by China Construction Association.
