Grand Gateway 66

Opening in 1999, Grand Gateway 66 became a landmark retail destination for the Xujiahui district in Shanghai, with a mixed use complex directly above the city’s largest subway station. To adapt the centre to contemporary demands, Hang Lung Properties began a two-stage renovation in 2017. The refurbished North Building was completed in 2018 and reopened with several luxury retail brands launching in Shanghai and Mainland China for the first time.

The renovation of the second, and main, building took four years to complete. Architects Kohn Pedersen Fox replaced an outdated façade with a radial design, removing bulky front steps and opening up a sweeping, modern piazza to improve public accessibility. The entrance to the centre is flanked by two double-story flagship stores for European luxury brands Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

Inhabit provided façade consulting to Hang Lung Properties for the project which took four years to complete. The façade is made up of  layers of curved glass with terracotta fins which create a repeating vertical motif. According to the architects, the fins are a “nod to the surrounding areas and materials of Shanghai and further the artistic quality and craftsmanship of the project.”
