DOHA METRO – MSHEIREB AND EDUCATION CITY STATIONS
The Doha Metro is one of the most advanced driverless metro systems in the world and was constructed ahead of the football World Cup in Doha in 2022. Phase one of the project involved the construction of three metro lines, with 37 stations currently having been completed. Msheireb Station is one of the largest metro stations in the world and is a major interchange point for all three metro lines. With four main levels underground, the lighting design creates a unique ambience and striking look for the network.
Inhabit’s Specialist Lighting Team worked in collaboration with renowned transportation architects, OneWorks, to provide technical input and coordination for implementing the unique lighting concept established by UNStudio. The design process also adopted a unique approach due to the complex geometries of the interior and completely custom-built luminaires that didn’t exist in the marketplace.
To generate accurate illuminance calculations, Inhabit used the architect’s Revit model with the ElumTools plug-in software which allowed the calculations to be produced with the exact geometries, finishes and reflectance values of the interior. This approach allowed the design to be tweaked and incrementally modified easily over the course of the design process to meet the stringent energy constraints, lux levels and uniformity levels, whilst remaining within the guidelines set out in UNStudio’s Branding Manual.
