Inhabit Wins: People’s Choice & Runner Up in Living Building Challenge

Melbourne, Australia:

The Living Building Challenge (http://living-future.org/lbc) is an internationally renowned building certification program, advocacy tool and philosophy that defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today.

Over the course of 10 weeks, the Inhabit Melbourne Building Physics team joined forces with The Buchan Group and Grun Consulting, supported by Rush Wright Associates and The Space Agency to submit a response to the 2016 Brickworks Living Building Challenge Design Competition.

Announced at last weeks awards ceremony, this team won the People’s Choice Award and received the Runner Up prize against a competitive field for its entry: ‘For The Common Good: A Restart to Retailing’

The brief:

“reimagine the design of a retail centre within a new community of parklands connected to a civic plaza and local homes”

Responding to the challenge, the team set forth to outline a strategy meeting the specific requirements of the Living Building Challenge ‘Petals’.

‘Petals’ – Place, Water, Energy, Health & Happiness, Materials, Equity and Beauty – are subdivided into a total of twenty imperatives, each of which focuses on a specific sphere of influence. Unlike other rating tools for sustainable design, every Petal objective is mandatory to meet, resulting in project innovation at each turn of the design process.

Based on this strategy, The Buchan Group created the vision ‘For The Common Good: A Restart to Retailing’ and are celebrating this double win.
