ArchDaily 2016 Building of the Year Awards: Grand Theatre Opera House

The Grand Theatre Opera House in Harbin China, has been awarded the ‘Cultural Architecture’ prize in the ArchDaily 2016 Building of the Year Awards, which concluded last week.

Concepted and designed by MAD Architects based in Beijing, the active skin of the building comprises 4 dancing ribbons and free-form curved skylights. The dancing ribbons are clad with a double curved 5mm thick aluminium panel fixed to a kalzip standing seam underlay.

A collaboration between the Inhabit Hong Kong & Inhabit Beijing offices, Inhabit’s role included assisting MAD to rationalise the 3D models and develop cladding systems that were commercially viable. The systems incorporated flexible fixing of 3-way adjustment brackets, continuous thermal insulation and weatherproofing layers.

In addition to this facade detailing, contract administration, review and inspection of construction design and the installation process were also undertaken by the team.

ArchDaily’s ( ‘Cultural Architecture’ award is one of 14 categories judged by its significant global audience.
